SAN JUAN - Police on Monday arrested a male stripper accused of murdering two [trans women] in Puerto Rico, authorities said.

Eliezer Santana Baez, 23, was caught while sleeping at his mother's home in suburban Guaynabo, police said. He allegedly shot a police officer in the leg in a gun battle Sunday night but evaded capture, authorities said.

Santana has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the shooting deaths of Augusto Flores Munoz, 23, on April 16, and Pedro Cruz Ramos, 30, on Feb. 4, police said. He has not been charged in connection with the police officer's shooting.

Santana has not been required to plead yet in the case but has told reporters that he is innocent. Bail was set at $1.2 smillion and he was remanded ginto custody since he could not post it, police said.

Pedro was the first reported antitransgender death in Puerto Rico.
