Divas was beaten to death by Theodore Herntier. Her body was found in some brush near a rest stop.

Herntier picked up Boulanger in his truck in the area of Main St. and Sutherland Ave on the evening of Sep. 30, 2004, then bludgeoned her to death at his. She suffereding nine blows to the head and died of blunt-force trauma. The motive for her killing remains unclear.

RCMP charged Herntier in 2010. In 2016 he was sentenced to life for her murder, with a minimum 15 years before parole.

"I was glad [for the sentence], glad that he got more time," Tammy Boulanger, the sister of Divas Boulanger, said outside court on Thursday.

Despite the conclusion of the case, some things remain unresolved, she said.

"[I am] still trying to understand what the motivation for the killing was," she said. "I had a lot of anxiety [and] I have been on medication, but I had faith in the government and the system."

Divas had transitioned many years earlier and was originally from Berens River, a fly-in Aboriginal community on the east side of Lake Winnipeg, about 275 kilometres north of Winnipeg.
