A Rochester teen accused of fatally stabbing Fatima Woods last month pleaded not guilty Thursday morning in City Court. Vincent A. Walters, 16, of Driving Park, is facing one count of second-degree murder in connection with the slaying that occurred outside a Dewey Avenue gas station about 4 a.m. on May 30.
Woods, 53, who is transgender, was stabbed twice in the torso, and was found by police found by police near the entrance to the gas station's convenience store, 780 Dewey. Woods was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital and was pronounced dead within the hour, according to City Court documents. Rochester Police Chief James Sheppard said it appeared that just before the slaying, Woods was involved in a dispute with a woman on Finch Street. Several other people "got involved" and Woods was fatally stabbed, he said.
Sheppard said it did not appear that Woods' gender was a factor in the slaying.
In the weeks since the homicide, numerous community members shared information about the altercation with police. As a result, and with help from Irondequoit police, Sheppard said, Walters was apprehended in the city Wednesday night by Rochester police.
