Bárbara was stabbed after arguing with a client who refused to pay her.
[Trans woman] Barbara Sodré, 29, was killed late last Monday, after arguing with a client who refused to pay for her services. Her killing took place in the center of the capital of Sergipe, where the victim worked as a sex worker, in the first such murder of the year in Sergipe.
According to information from Tathiane Araújo, president of the Aracaju Transgender and Transgender Association (Astra), Barbara was preparing to leave the profession because of the risks on the street:
Thatiane said that Barbara was preparing to leave sex work, precisely because of the risks involved. Last Monday, 25th, the day she was murdered, she was due to start a technical nursing course and was interning at the Emergency Hospital of Sergipe (HUSE). “I had a conversation with her a few days earlier and she told me that she would quit prostitution because of the lack of respect shown to sex workers. She said, 'Thatiane, they throw stone and urine at us here. No one respects us, '”Astra's president recalled.
Barbara, who was a native of Estância and had been in the profession for five years, had worked in Belo Horizonte and São Paulo, also feared rejection and prejudice when seeking work in another activity. “She said how people would react to her as a woman at work. I was afraid of being rejected,” she added.
