Brenda was found half-naked on her bed with head injuries. An office chair nearby was found with bloodstains and her car had been stolen.
Her killer was arrested, but released pending judicial proceedings.
Friends and relatives of Brenda Lee, found dead on December 16 , held a demonstration in Pelotas, southern Brazil. The 46-year-old transvestite's body was located inside the victim's own home with beat marks in the head. After a two-day investigation, a 21-year-old man was arrested by police. He confessed to committing the crime after an argument with Brenda.
The man, who confessed to Brenda's murder in testimony to the police, was released last Wednesday (23) after spending five days in temporary custody at the Pelotas Regional Prison . The judge who attended the case considered that the young man does not pose a risk to society. The court decision motivated the protest of Brenda's family and friends in downtown Gaucho.
"We are here to make a protest to demand justice, the police arrest and the justice released, he did not deserve to have gone through what he went through.He was an honest, dignified person and happened what happened.And the thug is there, loose, "Carmem Lucia, Brenda's aunt, is indignant.
The protest was organized using social networks and around 100 people attended on Monday (28). Participants wore T-shirts with Brenda's face in print and also carried signs and banners asking for punishment of the murderer.
"We do not want any mother to pass on what our mother is going through, to the point of not having a merry Christmas." It was a moment when she was crying, how can I wish a happy Christmas to a mother who for days has lost a child? " asked Patricia Duarte, sister of the victim.
The young man, who confessed to the crime, was indicted by the Civil Police for qualified homicide and theft, since he also stole Brenda's car. Police have requested his pre-trial detention, which has been denied by the courts. Therefore, he was released after the temporary arrest request expires. If the prosecution does not file a complaint, the juvenile may go freely until the day of the trial. The judiciary is in recess and will return to work on January 20.
Brenda Lee was known in Pelotas for her participation in Carnival. She was also a candidate for a council seat in 2008. Brenda Lee was a graduate in psychology from the Catholic University of Pelotas. Her postumous graduation ceremony took place three days after she was killed. The university issued a note condemning her murder.
