Sara Nicole was killed by a police officer during a traffic stop. The circumstances are considered suspicious and the officer involved has been suspended.
The LGBTIQ+ community in Cali is mourning and demanding justice after the death of Sara Nicole Muñoz Palacios, a 33-year-old trans woman who died in strange circumstances in the Valle del Cauca capital after being shot by a police patrol car.
Currently, the events in which the woman's death occurred are the subject of investigation by the city authorities. The death occurred in the downtown area of the city, near a police station, where Sara Nicole was in a taxi when she was approached by a uniformed officer.
According to some witnesses, the patrolman demanded that the trans woman get out of the vehicle to search him, but she refused. At this point, the vehicle started to move towards the uniformed officer, who drew his staff weapon and shot the young woman.
General Juan Carlos León Montes, commander of the Cali Metropolitan Police, reported that "they started the vehicle and drove it in reverse towards the policeman, it is then that he reacted with his firearm and they they fled the scene,” he said.
The inured woman was transferred to San Juan de Dios hospital, where she arrived alive; however, after the efforts of medical personnel, Sara Nicole passed away .
Meanwhile, the Metropolitan Police of Cali decided to remove the patrolman from the position while the investigation progresses , since LGBTIQ + groups have described the woman's death as a 'transfeminicide' and demand justice.
