Prominent Chilean transgender activist Claudia Díaz Pérez, 73, was found dead in her home in the country’s Valparaíso Province on Sunday. Police are investigating her death as a possible murder and hate crime.
A police spokesperson told Chilean newspaper El Líder that Pérez had been injured in a way that indicated another party may have been responsible. Pérez reportedly suffered a frontal head injury that caused her death within 24 hours.
Pérez was the president of “Club de Adultos Mayores Sobrevivientes del 73,” or Club for Older Adult Survivors of ’73 — Chile’s first organization for older trans people, named in reference to former military dictator Augusto Pinochet Ugarte’s brutal 1973 coup. Pérez was also a member of another trans organization, Sindicato Afrodita (Aphrodite Syndicate), as well as a former manager for amateur football club Cartagena Atlético; as a career, she operated the hair salon Peluquería Salón Claudita Unisex.
A suspect was arrested the following month.
