Abby Silva Moreira died at the age of 46 due to a sudden illness this Saturday (24), according to the city hall of Jaboatão dos Guararapes. In 2017, she became the first trans woman to join the municipal guard in Brazil. She died while sleeping at her home in the Candeias neighborhood.
The death of the activist for the rights of the LGBTQIA+ population will be investigated by the Death Verification Service (SVO). During the night, she got up to drink water, went back to sleep, but did not wake up.
The City Hall was informed about the death at 8:30 am today. Abby was a member of the Municipal Guard and was assigned to the Human Rights Department of Jaboatão dos Guararapes. The agent left a son and her wife, with whom he had been married for 28 years.
Being the first and only trans woman in the position of municipal guard in her municipality, Abby reported to g1, in 2022, that she suffered several cases of transphobia. She was removed from street activities in February last year and had salary bonuses cut, despite being a public servant.
In 2021, she suffered from strong depression due to transphobia. She also required two psychiatric hospitalisations. At the time, the then commander of the Jaboatão Municipal Guard, Admilson Silva de Freitas, was exonerated.
