Samantha was shot by a hitman while riding in a taxi. She was the second trans politician to be murdered in Mexico in a week, following Miriam Nohemí Ríos Ríos.

Samantha was a Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena) party candidate for the Mexican Senate who had been awarded the Medal of Merit for her work as a Human Rights Defender in 2022.

The first investigations indicate that the crime occurred after Samanta Fonseca left the Reclusorio Sur, where she held a meeting. For those in charge of the investigations, the murderers were already waiting for Samanta to kill her.

The first police reports indicate that the crime occurred this Sunday afternoon minutes after 6:00 pm in the surroundings of the Parish of Santiago Apóstol Tepalcatlalpan, on the corner of calle Del Trabajo with Cuauhtémoc in the Xochimilco Mayor's Office.

An ambulance assigned to the emergency arrived at the point to provide pre-hospital services but after a quick check they could only confirm that she no longer had vital signs.

Relatives of the deceased arrived at the cordoned-off site, screaming and crying inconsolably over the death of their loved one.

During initial police investigations the victim was identified as Samanta Fonseca, a trans woman and candidate for the Senate of the Republic for the National Regeneration Movement Party (Morena).

“In a cowardly way, the life was taken from our colleague and friend, Dr. Samantha Fonseca, a brilliant woman with an extensive career in the defense of human rights and against discrimination, who was awarded the Medal of Merit for the and Human Rights Defenders 2022".

“Samantha dedicated her life to different causes focused on the political participation of LGBTIQ+ people and the defense of the rights of people deprived of their liberty,” the legislator wrote.

According to preliminary information, the Senate candidate had planned to attend a demonstration this Monday in front of the Senate of the Republic to the mobilization for the dignity of trans women that is scheduled for 2:30 pm Samantha Gomes aspired to be a senator for Morena because she signed up for the party's internal selection process.
