Rafaela was found dead inside her cell in Complexo Penitenciário da Papuda. Although two other inmates alleged that she had "fallen from a wall" the case is being treated as homicide by authorities.
A trans woman was murdered last Tuesday (12/10) inside the Papuda Penitentiary Complex, in the Internment and Reeducation Center. The case is being investigated as homicide by the 30th Police Precinct (São Sebastião).
The victim, Rafaela Lorena Soares da Rocha, was killed in the wing reserved for transgender and travesti inmates, where she shared a cell with two men. Prison officers were called after hearing cries for help coming from the location.
Initially, the two prisoners who were in the cell with Rafaela claimed that she had fallen from a low wall that separates the bathroom from the cell. However, shortly after, the Correio Brasilienze website reported that the two men confessed to having wrapped a sheet around the victim's neck and that each of them had pulled on one side.
The Mobile Emergency Care Service (SAMU) and the Fire Department were called to provide assistance, but upon arrival, they confirmed the death. At the time of the crime, there were only the three of them.
