Derry Glenn

Derry was shot with a 9mm handgun. No other information is known.

Atlanta police believe slayings of six [people] since 1987 in an area frequented by [trans sex workers] may be the work of the same killer, and they are appealing to the gay community for help in the investigation.

Five of the victims - all of whom were dressed as women - were found shot to death in the Ashby Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive corridor in yards or other open areas, Deputy Chief Eugene Robinson said at a news conference Friday.

Although the sixth victim was found a mile away, [they were] killed with the same 45 caliber pistol as a [victim] found at Ashby and Mitchell streets 10 days later in November 1987, tests showed.

The victims were all found outdoors, late at night or in the early morning. The most recent, Derry Erwin Glenn, 38, was found shot to death with a 9mm handgun Dec. 18 on Camilla Street.

"We don't know if a single person or a group of persons is responsible," said Chief Robin- son. "We don't have a motive, except it must be someone who has some phobia about [trans people]."

Joan Garner of the City Council Public Safety Committee's Gay and Lesbian Task Force said police have asked her group to help obtain information.

Police said the victims, in addition to [Mx.] Glenn, are:

Gary Lamar Brooks, 35, found shot with a 22 caliber rifle August 25, 1987, outside 862 Par sons St. S.W.

Gary George, 27, killed Nov. 4, 1987, by someone who police believe picked him up in the Ashby Street area and dumped his body at the corner of Lee and White streets.

Cedric Parks, 30, found Nov. 14, 1987, killed with a .45 caliber bullet that matched the bullet in the George slaying.

Milton Crews, 41, found outside 131 Ashby St. N.W. April 28, 1990, shot with a 22 caliber pistol.

Jean Woodrow Powell, 34, found Nov. 8, 1991, outside. 399 Ashby St. N.W., killed with a .25 caliber pistol.
