Tatiana was killed in her apartment.
OAKLAND - A 23-year-old [trans woman] was found dead in [her] apartment Saturday, killed by mysterious means, authorities said.
Police identified the man as [deadname] Rivers, who was also known as Tatiana Rivers, or Keymani Howard. Deputy Coroner Kevin Hinkle said the death was "definitely" a homicide, but said there was no indication of how the [woman] was killed.
"There's no blunt trauma, no stab wounds, nothing to explain what happened," he said. He added, however, that there was evidence of a struggle in the apart ment, which is in a quiet wooded area near Mills College.
No weapons were found, he said, and there were no visible wounds on the body.
Asked how it was clear the death was a homicide, Hinkle said, "The way the body was found - just the position and what have you." He would not elaborate. "This is a case that needs an autopsy to determine what the cause of death is," agreed Deputy Coroner Frank Gentle. "It didn't look natural."
Oakland police were called to the apartment, in the 6100 block of Seminary Avenue, at 1:09 p.m. Saturday. Homicide investigators confirmed that they had interviewed people in the case at the police station, but would not call anyone a suspect. They said no arrests had been made.
