Sigfrilda was stabbed in the neck. She was intersex, worked as a dentist, and in 1997 had become the first trans woman to be legally recognised as female by the Honduran state. She had been married twice.

Her killers (one of whom was an ex-partner) were apprehended and sentenced to 43 years in prison.

TEGUCIGALPA - A court sentenced a woman and two men to 43 years in prison for murdering Sigfrilda Shantall Pastor, the first Honduran to have [reassignment surgery] and to be legally recognized by the state as a woman.

The three judges of the Tegucigalpa Court of Appeals convicted Bricelda Munguía, Pastor's former domestic partner, and her accomplices Eliseo Oviedo and Jorge Núñez. The verdict was announced this Tuesday.

The three criminals also murdered another of Pastor's domestic workers, identified as María Montoya. They also stole a large amount of jewelry and money from Pastor.

The appeal court imposed 18 years in prison on the three involved for murdering Pastor, seven for robbery and 18 for killing Montoya.

According to the judges, the criminals beat and stabbed Pastor, 50, and Montoya in May 1998 at their residence in Catacamas, 200 kilometers east of Tegucigalpa.

The body of Pastor, a dentist by profession, had a deep knife wound in the neck. She was popularly known here as "the Shantall".

After an intense 20-year legal struggle, Pastor managed to get the state to recognize her as a woman in November 1997. She obtained her identification document as such to vote in the general elections that year in Honduras.

He was born with the name Sigfrildo and changed his sex in 1976 in the United States, after several operations and special treatments at a cost of more than $130,000.

In her last interview with a local newspaper, Pastor said that "I am respected like an honorable lady."

She stated that he suffered from hermaphroditism since birth. "And, therefore, I have always been a woman, since I was in my mother's womb," after stating that she menstruated at the age of 11.

And she married twice in the United States, to Hondurans.
