Justine was shot by a homeowner who found her in a basement. News reports portrayed her as a burglar, whereas it may be that she was homeless and seeking shelter.

Police: DeKalb County homeowner shoots, kills intruder

LITHONIA, Ga. - Police need help identifying a [woman] suspected in a deadly home invasion early Monday, according to authorities.

DeKalb County Police said the [woman], who was wearing a wig and arched eyebrows, broke into a house on Beechwood Forest Drive just outside of Lithonia. The homeowner shot the [woman] in the stomach after [she] continued to walk towards him in a basement, according to investigators.

Lt. Lonzy Robertson told FOX 5's Marissa Mitchell the homeowner will likely not face charges in what is considered a "justifiable" shooting.

The deceased burglar is described as a dark-skinned black [woman], 5'6'' to 5'8'' weighing 180 pounds. Lt. Robertson said the [woman] was wearing a burgundy shirt and shorts at the time of the crime.

A comment on a Reddit post about her case gives some context to the possibility that she might have been homeless and seeking shelter:

Possibly from the homeless population? Especially since no one seems to know who it is. Or abandoned by their family for being trans. Sad deal. I also always feel for the homeowners in this situation. It must weigh on them to take a life. But in all honesty if someone was walking towards me in my creepy basement I would shoot to, I can't imagine how scary that would be.

People from several surrounding states and a few more northerly states come to the Atlanta area when street homeless because it is warmer than basically every area north, east, and west of it. Metros in almost every direction like Saint Louis, Louisville, Washington are all much colder if you're homeless. So possibly being homeless may not be a bad guess.

I just wonder if this is the case, what steps do police take? As far as I know, there are few or no shelters in the Atlanta area that accept an adult transgender resident so were she homeless she likely did not even access services or sign in anywhere.
