Barbara was shot by a client as she tried to run away. He gave chase and shot her again before fleeing. She died at the scene.
A [trans woman] identified as Bárbara Mendes was shot dead by a client after performing a program on Saturday night (21), in the center of João Pessoa. According to the Military Police, other [trans women] and [sex workers] who were at the scene saw the crime and even called for help, but the victim did not survive.
The crime took place on Rua Monsenhor Sabino Coelho, around 9 pm (local time). According to the PM, witnesses said that the victim arrived in a black car and soon after started running, when he was shot by the driver. The [trans woman]managed to walk to the intersection with Rua Desembargador José Peregrino, but then fell.
Witnesses said that the victim was making a program for the driver of the car, but they did not know who the client was. The Mobile Emergency Care Service (Samu) was called, but the victim died before the ambulance arrived.
Vandinaldo Rocha do Nascimento was subsequently arrested for Barbara's murder. Witnesses reported that he had killed her after approaching and arguing with her.
On 16th January 2023 Rocha, then 52, was assassinated in the street by two men in a vehicle.
