The shooting occurred in the 200 block of West Delaware Avenue about 6:30 a.m. Wednesday, Capt. Kevin Hearod of the McAlester Police Department said.
A responding officer found a Rover electric taxi that had been hit by gunfire multiple times, Hearod said.
Dustin was a married father of four and a founding member of Oklahomans for Equality-McAlester Chapter: Southeastern Equality. That organization is hosting a vigil and fundraiser for Dustin’s family on Friday, January 3, 2020 at 6:30 PM.
After his murder Dustin's wife Regina made the following statement:
"Dustin was such an amazing and special person. He was incredibly generous, kind, intelligent, and so empathetic. He had so many things that he wanted to do and achieve in his life. He was everyone’s shoulder to cry on and the best listener. He wanted to help everyone. Everyone always talks about his brilliant, contagious smile and positive attitude that brightened the room, no matter the surroundings.
I have always known how special he was, but I had no idea of all the lives that he touched and I am so grateful for all the love and support I have received.
I know if I tried to thank everyone I would forget someone, but I want everyone to know how incredibly thankful I am for the support from not only our family and friends, but also the community as a whole."
