Mateo was shot several times by an armed assailant who approached him while he was leading a community event in a sports complex.
The murder of [deadname] López Mejía, or after his transition Mateo López, this Saturday afternoon in Circasia (Quindío), was condemned by members of the LGBTI community and the municipal authorities.
Mateo, 25, who was remembered for his social actions in this and other towns in the Quindío department, was leading a community sancocho for the benefit of the least favored population in the sports complex in the La Esmeralda neighborhood of Circasia.
According to initial reports an armed man approached him and without saying a word shot him several times, ending his life.
The Mayor of Circasia, Ana Yulieth Díaz Ubaque, regretted the murder and remembered Mateo as her friend and as a person who very much liked helping others.
“He was a great friend who even helped us a lot in the campaign with his spark and his joy. Personally I very much regret the death of "Mateito". He was not a registered social leader but he was someone who liked to manage and help all people independently whether you were from the LGBTI community or not, "said the president.
Sandra Yuliana Martínez, transgender representative in Armenia, demanded a rigorous investigation in order to establish who was responsible for this murder.
"We reproach the murder of this great Leader and trans man. We are very sad that they continue to kill us. Many years ago they have been murdering gay, lesbian, transgender men and women and nothing has happened to stop this. We are against all acts of violence and we want them to do something for our population, ”said Sandra Yuliana.
