INDEPENDENCE, Mo. — Detectives in Independence continue to seek tips in the murder of a transgender woman last weekend.
Aerrion Burnett, 37, was found shot and killed Sept. 19 near 13th and Brookside. Her body was in a grassy area near the road.
While police are still searching for a motive and the suspect, her family waits.
“Aerrion was a beautiful soul,” said her sister, Tamara Griffin. “I don’t care what time of the day, evening, what day it was, Aerrion stayed the same, kept the same attitude. She was someone that you would have loved to have in your life.”
“Aerrion was a Barbie,” Korea Kelly told KITV Island News at a vigil held Tuesday. Describing her friend as “a goddess,” Kelly remembered Aerrion as “the person you wanted by your side.”
Burnett’s best friend and transgender woman Dee Dee Pearson was also violently killed in the area. Pearson was murdered on Christmas Eve in 2011 by a man who became enraged when he learned she was transgender after the pair had sex.
“As a friend, and both of those are my friends who both got killed the same way, and being a Black trans woman myself, that hurts like hell,” Kelly continued. “It’s a pain that I can’t fathom. It’s a pain that I don’t know how to fathom or to tell anyone how I’m feeling.”
