Najma was shot in a confrontation with police while trying to free her brother, who is alleged to be involved in the sale of drugs. She died from her injuries.
A woman was killed in a clash that broke out after miscreants attacked a police outpost in Chattogram city in an attempt to free two people who had just been arrested. The incident took place at Kalurghat Police Outpost under Chandgaon Police Station on Saturday night.
The dead [woman] was identified as Nazma Akhtar, 30, sister of "Hanif Bahini". Hanif was one of the two arrestees.
Locals and police said Hanif runs a drug racket that is also involved in extortion and mugging in Kalurghat. He is notoriously known for using hijras as his associates to do his bidding.
"Police arrested Hanif and his associate Delwar with 5,000 yaba pills in the area around 8:00pm and took them to the Kalurghat Police Outpost," said Mainur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Chandgoan Police Station,
After word got out about their arrest, one of Hanif's sister, who is a hijra, led the Hanif Bahini and swooped on the outpost with local weapons and whisked Hanif and Delwar away, he added. Witnesses said when police opened fire on the attackers to disperse them, Nazma was hit by bullets.
"Her body was found at the Chattogram Medical College and Hospital early in the morning. Police later it sent to the morgue," said Monibur Rahman, inspector (investigation) of Chandgaon Police Station,
