Michelle died by suicide in a Florida prison. She was a poet, artist and advocate who published her work in the newsletter of the Alyssa Rodriguez Center for Gender Justice.

In one letter, she wrote, "They took my hair, makeup, etc.; they can take everything. They can use any restraint or restriction that legislation has approved in correction. But, one thing they cannot do is take away my voice."

The obituary published by Michelle's family misgenders and deadnames her. An adjusted version is reproduced below:

[Michelle Cornwell], 31, of Brooksville, Florida passed away on January 27, 2024, in Milton, Florida. Michelle was born in Gainesville, Florida on March 14, 1992. [She] was the thirdborn of eight children.

As a child [Michelle] enjoyed playing sports. [She] played soccer, baseball, football, basketball and was even on [her] high school swim team. [She] was also very smart. [She] made honor roll or principals list more than all of [her] other brothers combined. [She] was very close with [her] brothers and cousins growing up. They would play outside from sun up to sun down then come inside and play video games, board games and Pokémon cards until bedtime.

As an adult [Michelle] got more interested in art. [She] loved to draw pictures and write poetry. [She] also loved music. [She] enjoyed to write songs, sing, and played the guitar. One thing many people may not know about [her] is how much [she] enjoyed cooking. [She] would cook meals for the entire family. [Her] favorite meal to cook was beef stroganoff.

[Michelle] was always a funny, friendly and caring person. [She] could always take a joke. If you gave [her] one you better be ready to take one though. [She] always seemed to bring more fun and life into the room. [She] was also very outgoing and could talk to anyone. [She] would make friends with them too and [she] could be friends with anyone. [She] never judged people before [she] got to know them either.

[Michelle] could find the positive in any situation. [She] was a great person and an amazing friend, brother and [daughter].
