Mayte was a textile artisan, bodybuilder and a muxe community leader. Her body was found with signs of violence near the Juchitán-Tehuantepec federal highway.
In 2020, photographer Maria Elena Valdés portrayed her as part of Muxelandia, a photography project that seeks to expand the possibilities of a world beyond binarism.
Mayte LM, a member of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transsexual (LGBT) community, was murdered in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, Oaxaca.
The young woman of Juchiteco origin was found on Tuesday morning, with a gunshot wound, next to federal highway 185, Tehuantepec-Juchitán section, a few meters from the junction that leads to the Rancho Llano municipal agency in the neighboring town of San Blas Atempa.
Her body was found among some bushes and rubbish. Her face was covered, her hands tied behind her back, and her bare feet were tied with tape as signs of the torture she suffered before being killed. At the time of her death she was wearing a pink blouse and blue jeans. The corresponding investigation file was opened for this incident.
As of Tuesday afternoon, the motive for the crime remains unknown, although authorities say they have not ruled out any line of investigation.
Members of the LGBT community mourned the death and demanded justice.
"With profound indignation and pain, we at the Trans Indigenous and Afro-descendant Meeting of the State of Oaxaca strongly condemn the murder of our colleague Mayte Matus Regalado," the organizing group announced on the same day.
"This act of extreme violence reminds us of the vulnerability that trans women face in our society, particularly in regions such as the Isthmus, where discrimination and violence based on gender and identity are exacerbated," they said.
They therefore demanded a thorough investigation to clarify this "hate crime," achieve justice and end impunity for this community, as well as the implementation of effective public policies that guarantee the security and full exercise of human rights of trans, indigenous and Afro-descendant people in the state.
