The family of a Barnsley teen who took their own life after being 'bullied to the edge of his existence' has called on the government to criminalise bullying among children over the age of 10.
[deadname] Lee, known as Ollie, took his own life on October 6, 2024, after he endured relentless taunts and physical attacks, according to his mum, Courtney Lee. Ollie was a student at Barnsley Academy and accessed mental health support from Barnsley Council.
Courtney said he "died by suicide after enduring relentless bullying that was ignored, mishandled, and tragically downplayed by the systems meant to protect him".
At a pre-inquest review hearing at Sheffield Coroners' Court today (Tuesday, January 27), Assistant Coroner Hannah Berry called on witnesses representing Barnsley Council, Barnsley Academy and mental health services. The inquest has been set for May 6 to May 8 this year.
