Alejandra's body was found in the waters of the Rio Portoviejo. Her death is under investigation and murder has not been ruled out.
We deeply regret the murder of our colleague Alejandra M (Runa Sipiy SX MAN-241107 encoding), known as "La Carnicera", whose body was found last Thursday, November 7, 2024, at approximately 5:00 p.m., floating in the Rio Portoviejo, near the El Salto bridge, in the city of Portoviejo in the province of Manabí.
Alejandra's body was found entangled in the palisade on the riverbank, making it difficult for authorities to immediately access the scene. After local residents alerted the scene, the National Police, along with Criminal Investigations and Dinased personnel, arrived at the scene. However, due to the complexities of the rescue, the Andrés de Vera Fire Department and the Central Fire Company were requested to assist, and they were able to recover Alejandra's body from the water.
Authorities have reported that Alejandra died approximately 15 hours before her discovery, as her body showed no obvious signs of decomposition. The results of an autopsy are currently pending, which will determine the exact cause of her death, as no official details have yet been provided about how this terrible crime occurred.
We strongly condemn this act of violence, which, in addition to taking the life of a valuable member of our community, underscores the alarming situation of insecurity and vulnerability faced by trans people in Ecuador. Transfemicide is one of the most extreme forms of violence we suffer, and we cannot allow this crime to go unpunished. From the Federation and the Silueta X Association, we will continue to fight for the rights of our community, demanding security, justice, and respect for all trans people in Ecuador.
