Television writer Aziza "Z" Barnes, whose work included an upcoming Game of Thrones spinoff series, has passed away. Barnes was just 32 years old.
Per Deadline, Barnes died by suicide on Sunday, Dec. 15, with their family confirming the news through a rep. There were no additional details shared about the circumstances of Barnes' death, though the family shared a statement to announce the news while expressing their sorrow over the loss..
“With heavy hearts, we regret to inform you of the passing of an undeniable and beloved artist, child, sibling, and friend Aziza ‘Z’ Barnes,” the statement reads. “Z has touched and inspired countless individuals both in their community and industry and will be deeply missed and endlessly loved by all who were fortunate to have experienced their presence and work. An incomparable talent, we look for understanding in Z’s words, and wish comfort and understanding as we grieve this loss.”
Barnes earned a BFA from New York University and attended the University of Mississippi to pursue an MFA. They had also served as a member of the award-winning NYU Poetry Slam team. Barnes won an Exploding Pinecone Prize from Button Poetry as the author of the 2013 chapbook me Aunt Jemima and the nailgun, and their poetry collection, i be but i ain't, won a Pamet River Prize from YesYes Books. They also wrote the acclaimed stage show BLKS.
Barnes also pursued work as a TV writer, working on shows like FX's Snowfall, Netflix's Teenage Bounty Hunters, and Max's Rap Sh!t. Additionally, Barnes worked as a writer on HBO's upcoming Game of Thrones spinoff series, titled A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms; the show is set to be released on HBO in 2025.
