Run over
Paula died after being run over by a man who had argued with her in a bar. Police arrested a 51 year-old man in connection with her death.
In the early hours of last Saturday (25), a 51-year-old man was arrested after running over and killing Paula Nascimento Batista, a 26-year-old transgender woman. According to the Civil Police, the accident occurred after an argument between the suspect and the victim in a bar in Atalaia (about 40 km from Maringá).
Paula, who was a nurse and physiotherapy student, was at the scene with friends when she got into an argument with the suspect. The reason for the fight was not disclosed by the police.
The victim then decided to leave the bar on foot. At this point, she was hit by a vehicle driven by the same man she had argued with moments before.
Delegate Luiz Carlos Manica reported that there are indications that the crime may have been motivated by hate, considering that Paula was a trans woman.
“During the interrogation, he said he was drunk, had consumed alcohol and did not realize he had run over the victim. He believes he was run over, realized he had hit something, but didn't know he was the victim. We believe it was too much of a coincidence, but the facts still require further investigation,” he explains.
The Civil Police have opened an investigation into the case. The suspect is expected to be charged with intentional homicide and remains in custody while the investigation progresses.
