Adeline died by suicide.
Adeline Claire Johnson, 19, of Asheville, North Carolina, transitioned from this life on April 25, 2025.
Adeline’s kindness, playful spirit, and intellect touched many lives during her short time here. She saw the world in a unique and thoughtful way, bringing a special creativity and sensitivity to everything she did. She loved spending time with children and shared her joyful sense of play with them. Adeline hoped to become a teacher one day. Her cunning, existential wit, brilliance, and gentle nature left a lasting impression on all who knew her.
Adeline was a transgender young woman on the autism spectrum—exquisitely intelligent, with a fierce sense of justice and deep curiosity. She wrote protective legislation for trans youth that was adopted in Illinois, composed music that reflected her rich inner life, and served as a kind, nonjudgmental friend to many. She worked tirelessly to make the world a better place.
The weight of cruelty, injustice, and despair in this world became unbearable. Adeline died by suicide, leaving behind her mother, sister, and community devastated by the loss of her bright and beautiful presence.
Adeline will be deeply missed by her mother, sister, and all who knew and loved her.
