Aiden died by suicide. After his death his family raised serious concerns about the lack of gender-affirming care he had received while on the Tavistock GIC waiting list.
Aiden had been referred by hs GP to the Tavistock Gender Identity Clinic (GIC) when he was 16, but according to his family he was afraid he would spend years on a GIC waiting list, only to then be told that he couldn’t be helped because he was autistic. In the meantime he had waited without any appropriate medical or psychological support.
When he turned 18, Aiden's GP made a re-referral to the GIC but heard nothing back. By the time he died two years later he had still not received a first appointment.
Aiden was just 20 when he died in May 2025. When I spoke to Aiden’s family and asked them what he was like, one of the first responses was that he always said he was an unlucky person, and it feels like that sometimes.
They remember Aiden as a very good soul, someone who was kind and considerate. Aiden loved animals, birds and his garden of wildflowers. He had a gecko called Paprika, a fishtank full of fish and a cat, Dusk.
Aiden’s favourite colour was purple, the deep dark Cadburys purple. Aiden had sensory difficulties, and there were some textures he didn’t like to touch, but with his mum’s help for chopping, he’d cook dinner, chicken stir fry noodles being a favourite. He was also partial to pizza, plain cheese or pepperoni and his real favourite meal was fish and chips.
Aiden liked computers and had a close circle of online friends, who reached out to his family after his death, and attended his funeral online. Aiden also had one or two close friends who were nearby, although Aiden found it increasingly difficult to leave his home. When he was able to though, he’d pop to the local coop store, knock on his friend’s downstairs window and leave them a bottle of coke. Aiden’s family describe him as very caring, deeply caring.
The small things mattered to Aiden. He liked to gift handmade gifts as presents and he’d take as much care and time wrapping them beautifully, as making them.
When I ask what made Aiden laugh, his mum says her ineptitude with technology and her doing silly things, or Dusk, his cat doing silly things.
Aiden was diagnosed autistic when he was about 8. His family had already identified he was autistic, which didn’t come as a surprise as his mother is also autistic. They tell me that Aiden was extremely good at masking and he found life incredibly tough at times.
The first inquest into Aiden's death was quashed and a second inquest ordered following a legal challenge brought by his family raised after the coroner misgendered Aiden and refused to hear evidence from his family.

When a trans man died by suicide, the coroner issued a death certificate that said he was a woman. Following legal action from Good Law Project, there will be a new inquest – with a new coroner.
Aiden Longmuir took his own life in May 2025, when he was 20 years old. He had been living as a man since he was 12, and appeared as male in all his medical and financial records.
Three days after he died, Woking Coroner’s Court got in touch with Aiden’s family about an inquest into his death. The family asked for his death certificate to list him as a man, and were told that this would be at the coroner’s discretion.
Despite repeated attempts to find out what the coroner would decide, when the assistant coroner opened the hearing on 24 October, the family still didn’t know how this vital question would be resolved.
At the hearing, the coroner said that she had to make “findings of fact for the purpose of registration”. Citing the Supreme Court decision on the definition of sex under the Equality Act, she found that “biologically the body was that of a female”.
But the law governing the registration of deaths doesn’t define “sex”. And the Supreme Court judgment doesn’t say anything about how sex should be defined on death certificates.
The coroner’s decision also runs directly against guidance the chief coroner issued in June 2025, which says that “if after making enquiries a coroner concludes a person has chosen to present as male then the coroner can regard them as male”. It would be clear, even in the most basic of enquiries, that Aiden was presenting and living as male.
When the family stood up to the coroner, quoting this guidance, she said that it was “at odds with how I interpret the law”.
Even though the family told her how hard Aiden fought to be accepted, and that recording him as a woman would be “like spitting in his face”, the coroner issued a death certificate calling him “female”.
When the family reached out to Good Law Project for help, we worked with Leigh Day to prepare a legal challenge to this decision. We wrote to Surrey County Council setting out the law around registering deaths, explaining how this decision could be in breach of Aiden’s right to a private life, and laying out other issues with the inquest that could make it unlawful.
The coroner has now agreed to quash the inquest, saying that a new inquest will be held before a different coroner. This inquest will consider Aiden’s’s death again, including the question of how he should be recorded on his death certificate.
