Sol was a nonbinary journalist. Their suicide came after they had been dismissed by their employer for reporting workplace transphobia.
El Movimiento de Integración y Liberación Homosexual (Movilh) deeply regrets and expresses its greatest concern for the death of journalist and Frente Amplio activist Sol Millacura Hernández Márquez, who took their own life on November 11 after discrimination by the Valparaíso Health Authority based on gender identity and expression.
In their lawsuit against the Valparaíso Regional Health Authority, Hernández Márquez denounced violations of fundamental rights, unjustified dismissal, and discrimination based on gender identity.
According to El Mercurio de Valparaíso, in their lawsuit the journalist stated that "Pamela Ampuero, who was the Chief of Staff, told me that on at least one occasion the regional secretary Lorena Cofré had asked her to speak with me so that I would not wear certain clothes."
