The body of a 29-year-old trans woman was found in a building in a state of collapse located at 466 calle Sol, between Villegas and Ejido, in the municipality of Old Havana, as confirmed by a collaborator of CubaNet present at the scene.
The victim was identified as Gadir Eduardo, a native of Las Tunas.
According to witnesses cited by the source, the young woman died from self-inflicted injuries, specifically by [suicide method redacted]. However, authorities have not yet officially confirmed the cause of death.
The discovery occurred this Friday around 3:00 PM. Neighbors of the building — occupied by homeless people and in an advanced state of disrepair — decided to check the place after noticing a strong odor. That's when they found the body.
According to a CubaNet contributor who spoke on condition of anonymity, police officers went to the site and began an investigation to determine the reasons that led to such a decision.
The young woman's partner was not at the scene at the time of the discovery, but arrived after being notified and was questioned by the authorities.
The victim resided irregularly in the building, a construction in critical condition that is part of the deteriorated housing stock of the Cuban capital, where numerous properties present structural risk and are occupied by people without housing alternatives.
This case occurs in a context where suicide has been recognized as a public health problem in Cuba. According to the Statistical Yearbook of Health (with data up to 2023), 1,671 deaths were recorded that year due to "intentional self-inflicted injuries": 1,390 men and 281 women.
According to the Pan American Health Organization's (PAHO) country profile, the suicide rate in Cuba is 10.2 per 100,000 inhabitants. In 2021, suicide was the tenth leading cause of death in the country and the third leading cause among those under 18, according to the Ministry of Public Health.
While authorities continue to investigate the specific circumstances of Gadir Eduardo's death, the case once again puts the state of mental health in Cuba and the vulnerable conditions in which many people live, especially those residing in dilapidated buildings or lacking strong support networks, at the center of the debate.
