Giseel was an activist and human rights defender known for her entrepreneurial and respectful nature.
The death of Giseel Guzmán, a renowned trans leader and human rights defender in Honduras, has generated dismay among social organizations and activists who remember her as a figure committed to the defense of the LGBTIQ+ community.
Giseel, 31, had been part of Asociacion Colectivo Violeta for over 15 years, where she actively participated in processes of accompaniment, advocacy and defense of human rights.
In a public statement, organizations such as Colectivo Violeta, Transfénix and LARBY's Artemis lamented the murder of their colleague and expressed solidarity with her family, friends and members of the collective. According to a family member's testimony, Guzmán was dedicated to renting apartments and was also starting new projects to generate income.
The activist's body was found early Friday morning, March 13, in the return tunnel of the El Carrizal neighborhood in Tegucigalpa, the capital of Honduras. According to the preliminary report from the National Police, the body was found around 4:00 a.m. during a preventive patrol.
Authorities indicated that she had several visible injuries and that evidence was collected at the scene as part of the investigation.
The Collective Association Alma Violeta deeply regret the killing of our leader Gissel Aguilar Centeno, who was part of our organization for more than 15 years. We sympathize with the grief of her family, friends and colleagues.
