The murder of a young trans woman in Santander de Quilichao, Cauca, has generated profound shock within the LGBTIQ+ community. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of March 19, has reignited the debate about LGBTIQ+ violence in Colombia and the lack of protections for this population.
The case of the young trans woman murdered in Quilichao was uncovered in the Morales Duque neighborhood, where the lifeless body of [deadname] Tróchez, known as "Vaiolet", a young [trans woman] known in the area, was found.
According to preliminary information, the victim had a stab wound to the chest, near the heart, which caused her immediate death. She was initially unidentified, as she was not carrying any documents, but her identity was confirmed hours later by community leaders.
The body was transferred to Forensic Medicine with the support of the community, while investigations into the crime continue.
The LGBTIQ+ community has expressed its sorrow at what they consider a new episode of violence against vulnerable populations, and has called for real guarantees of protection, as well as decisive actions to prevent these events from happening again.
