Aleanna died in hospital after being found with a stab wound to the abdomen in the stairwell of a housing complex.
The Binghamton Police Department responded to the incident at noon and found her in a stairwell suffering from what they called a "significant stab" to the abdomen. Officers immediately rendered aid until emergency medical services arrived on scene and continued lifesaving measures. Aleanna was transported to a local area hospital for further treatment. She died at 2:30 a.m.
Roy A. Peterson, 54, was found inside an apartment within the facility and was taken into custody in connection with the fatal stabbing. Police said Peterson and Aleanna knew each other.
On April 22, Binghamton Police Captain Matthew Hodnik said Belcher was a transgender woman. He said police are "exploring all avenues" in the ongoing investigation.
Peterson was charged with second-degree murder, arraigned in Binghamton City Court and remanded to the custody of the Broome County Correctional Facility.
