Run over
Cecilia died after being run over by a truck. The driver was arrested on suspicion of homicide.
The death of Cecilia, a 47-year-old trans woman, which occurred in the early hours of May 1st at the intersection of routes 11 and 12, in Gualeguay, is being investigated by the Justice system under different hypotheses, including that of a homicide aggravated by her gender identity.
The initial report to the police indicated a possible traffic accident: a truck driver had allegedly run over the victim without noticing and continued driving. Cecilia's body lay on the asphalt. "The incident came to light around 1 am, when police officers responded to the scene after discovering a deceased person," reported the newspaper El Debate Pregón.
However, as the initial investigations progressed, doubts began to emerge about that initial version. The case was assigned to prosecutor Mariángeles Schell, who went to the scene and ordered an autopsy. She also ordered a series of measures that allowed progress reconstructing the events.
The truck driver, a man in his fifties who works for a company in Crespo, did not stop after the incident. He was located hours later near General Galarza and was taken into custody at the Gualeguay Police Headquarters.
As the hours passed, the hypothesis of a simple accident began to lose traction. One line of investigation suggests that the victim had a prior encounter with the truck driver and that, after an argument related to payment for sexual services, the man tried to leave. According to the preliminary reconstruction, Cecilia attempted to prevent the vehicle from leaving by grabbing onto it, at which point she was dragged and subsequently run over. If this sequence of events is confirmed, the accidental death hypothesis would be definitively ruled out.
The case sparked a strong reaction from social organizations. Diversidad Gualeguay demanded that the case be investigated with a gender and diversity perspective, and that the incident not be reduced to a mere traffic accident.
"Cecilia died at work. She died exposed to the violence and precariousness faced by so many trans women," they stated in a press release. They also demanded that, should a motive linked to hatred based on gender identity be proven, the act be classified as a transvesticide or transfemicide.
