Kimberli was stabbed in the street by her ex-partner. Her murder caused widespread outrage in Spain.
A new case of violence has shocked Spain, after a 33-year-old transgender woman was brutally murdered by her ex-partner in the middle of a public street, in an incident that occurred this Tuesday, May 19, in the city of Figueres, province of Girona.
The victim was attacked with a knife in plaza Josep Tarradellas in the capital of Alt Empordà, a busy area close to commercial establishments and spaces frequented by families and students. The attacker was her ex-partner, a 48-year-old Spanish man with a history of violence and a current restraining order. Despite these court restrictions, the man allegedly approached the woman several times in recent days.
According to information known so far, this crime occurred in the afternoon, when the woman was in a public place and in a matter of seconds was intercepted by Andrés RC, who attacked her repeatedly with a knife.
Videos posted on social media show the woman lying on the grass next to a bench, where she said she had been before the horrific attack. Despite the rapid arrival of medical and police teams, several people alerted the Emergency Medical System (SEM). The victim died at the scene due to the severity of her injuries, which were reportedly to her chest, arms, and neck.
This incident sparked outrage among residents of the area, especially because the assailant acted with complete coldness after attacking the woman, as can be seen in the videos. After committing the crime, he tried to walk away and wiped the blood from his arms and hands in a nearby fountain before being detained by bystanders and subsequently arrested by the Mossos d'Esquadra (Catalan Police) and the Figueres Municipal Police.
The man arrested today was reportedly recently arrested for violating a restraining order and for new episodes of violence related to the same victim.
According to the High Court of Justice of Catalonia (TSJC), the man had faced a fast-track trial in which he received a six-month prison sentence for domestic abuse and a restraining order against the woman. Even so, he ended up being released again.
This case reopened the debate in Spain about the effectiveness of protection measures for victims of assault and gender violence. Following the murder, local authorities called for moments of silence in memory of the victim, while social organizations demanded greater protection and prevention mechanisms in the face of such cases.
