Reina was stabbed in the street by unidentified assailant(s).

A 26-year-old transgender woman known as la Reina Mengueña was brutally stabbed to death early Monday morning in Santo Domingo, Chontales department. The case is under investigation by the National Police.

Authorities have launched an operation to identify those responsible for the crime, which is already being investigated as a possible hate crime. According to the news site Punto Noticioso TV, the victim was stabbed in the left side of the chest, a wound that proved fatal.

A video posted on the Facebook page Santo Domingo Activo shows the last moments of Reina Mengueña's life. The footage shows her walking along one of the streets of the municipality, visibly injured and covered in blood. According to preliminary information, her body was found hours later on a street in downtown Santo Domingo.

There are still no clear clues about the perpetrator of the attack or the motives that triggered the tragedy.

The incident has caused consternation in the town where she grew up. Known as the Queen of Mengueña, she was a well-known figure within the LGBT community for her charisma and her constant participation in equestrian events and festivities.

Among the first reactions after her death was that of the Toros de Chontales baseball team, which last year became runner-up in the Germán Pomares 2025 National Championship. The Queen of Mengueña was a prominent fan of this team, which deeply mourned her passing.
