Abi was stabbed in the street by a woman who had argued with her. Her attacker was arrested.
RISARALDA, COLOMBIA (JUNE 9, 2026) – A judge ordered the detention of Mariana Mejía Sánchez, 33, in a prison facility. Authorities have identified her as the alleged perpetrator of the murder of [deadname] Benavides Álvarez, 32, in events that occurred in the municipality of Dosquebradas.
According to the investigation, the case was registered at around 3:10 a.m. on June 7th at Carrera 16 with Calle 47 in the Los Naranjos neighborhood.
According to the Prosecutor's Office, Mariana Mejía Sánchez allegedly had an altercation with [Abi], a member of the LGBTQ+ community, and during the confrontation she allegedly used a bladed weapon, possibly a knife, to attack her. The victim suffered multiple injuries.
Upon arriving at the scene, uniformed police officers found a woman lying on the ground and several people present pointed to Mariana Mejía Sánchez as the alleged aggressor.
[Abi] was transported by ambulance to Santa Monica Hospital, where she was admitted with severe injuries to her chest, torso, arms, and legs. Despite resuscitation efforts by medical personnel, she died due to the severity of her injuries.
Since the victim was not carrying identification documents upon arrival, her body was initially taken to the Forensic Medicine Institute as an unidentified body. Later, through forensic procedures and fingerprint verification, her identity was fully established.
The 17th Local Prosecutor's Office (URI) of Pereira charged Mariana Mejía Sánchez with homicide.
