Alexa died by suicide in a prison cell after officials denied her access to mental health care.
It has been reported that Alexa Álvarez Ríos, 29, a trans woman and inmate of Penitenciario Federal de Ezeiza, committed suicide because prison authorities denied her access to mental health care. The Federal Court of Lomas de Zamora is investigating.
"Alexa was unwell and everyone knew it; it could have been prevented if she had received help from mental health professionals," the CUE told Tiempo. They added, "She was very depressed; we know she had a very hard and painful life."
Alexa's body was found lifeless in the early hours of June 7th inside a cell in Pavilion 5, designated for the LGBTQ+ community. The woman was going through a very difficult time and [suicide method redacted], her fellow inmates say; "she never saw a psychologist."
"We have been denouncing for some time that detainees are dying due to a lack of medical attention and mental health professionals. We are talking about deaths that occur in state custody and that could be prevented ," they emphasized.
Students denounced her death, saying "We consider it a slow-motion genocide, something very ugly that expresses a great contempt for human life."
