Tortured and strangled
Ivonne was murdered in the beauty salon she had opened four months earlier. A suspect has been arrested.
On July 1st, Ivonne Álvarez, a 32-year-old trans woman, was tortured and murdered at her beauty salon in Iztapalapa, a borough located in the eastern part of Mexico City. According to information from the Mexico City Attorney General's Office, her murder is being investigated under the femicide protocol, and a man allegedly involved in the crime has been arrested following the investigation.
In an interview with Presentes, Silvia, Ivonne’s sister, speaks candidly: "I feel terrible. I can't believe this because she went out to work; she was supposed to come back. I used to wait for her just like every other day—waiting for her to arrive in her van with the music blasting and honking the horn. I still think she’s going to come back, that I’ll see her getting ready, putting on her wig, and asking me, 'How do I look?' And I’d tell her, 'Beautiful.' Because I always saw her as beautiful. But the truth is, I have to accept that she won't—I won't see her anymore."
Ivonne was originally from Nezahualcóyotl (State of Mexico) but worked in Iztapalapa. She enjoyed having tacos and smoothies for dinner, dancing, and listening to electro-house and pop music at full volume. In March of this year, she opened her own business: a beauty salon and barbershop.
To open her salon, Ivonne had to sell her car and engage in sex work. "There were few clients because of the situation, you know? So, to have money and be able to eat, she also sold desserts and worked as a sex worker—simply because she didn't make enough money otherwise—but she opened the salon so she could stop doing that [sex work]," Silvia explains.
