Murdered
Queta's body was found tied up with a cable in the Iztapalapa area of Mexico City.
Luis Acevedo was subsequently arrested on suspicion of murder.
This weekend, two trans women were murdered in Mexico City: on Friday, July 17, Queta Palafox, an elderly woman known by that name to some trans women, was murdered in Iztapalapa. Yesterday, the body of a trans woman was found in her apartment in the Piloto Culhuacán neighborhood of Coyoacán.
Both bodies were found with visible signs of violence, which points to hate crimes based on the victims' gender identity.
Victoria Samano, a trans woman and founder of the collective and civil association La Lleca, Escuchando la calle (Listening to the Street), named these transfemicides on her social media and warned that the investigation file for the murder of Queta Palafox has not so far been brought to the specialized femicide area of the Mexico City prosecutor's office.
These crimes occurred amidst protests by members of the trans and non-binary community, who held a sit-in for 21 days (until July 10) in front of the Ministry of the Interior, demanding the creation of a Comprehensive Trans Law and the inclusion of hate crimes in the Federal Penal Code, following recommendation 42/2024 from the National Human Rights Commission. Their demands also included a guarantee of a comprehensive healthcare model with adequate supplies and functional medical care, as well as the implementation of effective policies for job placement and identity registration processes free from institutional discrimination.
