ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) - A mother says she is facing what she calls every parent’s worst nightmare after her 21-year-old daughter, Jhené Audrict, was found dead at the corner of Minnesota Avenue and Bowen Street on Aug. 17.
“Jhené was found with a gunshot to the back of her head,” said Melissa Crawford, Jhené’s mother. Crawford says the story of her daughter should not end there.
“She is a transgender, 21-year-old woman. I am proud to be her mother. She was very adventurous, a traveler, highly educated,” Crawford said.
Jhené was a college student who spent a year and a half living in Hawaii. Her mother says she last spoke with her on Aug. 15, when Jhené was headed to her boyfriend’s house.
“I spoke to her. She told me that she was kind of nervous about going to her boyfriend’s house because they were having issues,” Crawford said. The next morning, Crawford received a call from the boyfriend saying Jhené was missing.
After a day of searching, Jhené was found. Crawford is questioning what happened in the hours before her daughter’s death. “Jhené was legally blind. Unfortunately, when they did find Jhené, Jhené’s glasses were not located on her face. Jhené cannot see without her glasses,” Crawford said.
Crawford says she does not believe her daughter took her own life. Police say the circumstances surrounding Jhené’s death remain under investigation.
“The resolution for me is to get justice for Jhené. Also, to advocate for the trans community. Awareness for domestic violence. And also advocating even for mental health,” Crawford said.
“I will not rest. And I will not let this be swept underneath the rug. Jhené Cordelia Audrict will get justice,” Crawford said.
