Kaden died by suicide. After he passed away his mother revealed that he felt ostracised by a lot of people and that stronger support for trans kids is needed in the community.
ELORA - The mother of an Elora teen who died by suicide is speaking out about the need for stronger support for trans kids in the community.
“If you’re a parent and you have a queer kid, you constantly have to worry,” says Angela Hammond.
Her oldest child, Kaden Hammond, was an exceptional artist, who loved video games, nature and animals, and had strong relationships with both family and close friends.
But he also struggled with anxiety and mental health issues and experienced bullying in school.
“He struggled with feeling he couldn’t be his authentic self in front of people,” Angela says.
The 15-year-old died by suicide Sept. 27, a fact the family shared candidly in his obituary, along with a message about the importance of supporting 2SLGBTQIA+ youth and creating safe spaces where young people feel accepted.
“Kaden deserved a world that fully saw, celebrated and protected him,” the obituary reads. “In his memory, we ask that you fight fiercely for the acceptance, safety and dignity of all transgender people.”
